Tame Your Thoughts, Tame Your Life

For as he thinks in his heart, so is he. Prov. 23:7

Every problem starts at the thought level. Before a word in your mouth, there’s a thought in your mind. Before any action there’s a thought, whether positive or negative.

Before you can successfully tame your life, you need to tame your thought. As you think so you are. That’s why Proverb 4:23 says to “Guard your heart with all diligence because it affects everything you do.”

When dealing with issues we usually focus at the macro level, the big stuff, whereas the micro is the most important aspect. Your thought is at the micro level. Even the most incurable and life-threatening sicknesses and diseases we battle with today are caused by micro-organisms—viruses and bacteria.

But usually, something give rise to them. Negative thoughts and attitudes can lead to feelings of helplessness and hopelessness which can create chronic stress. And this is what upsets the body’s hormone balance, thereby depleting the brain chemicals required for happiness, and then damages the immune system.

What can you do? Philippians 4:8 offers us a wealth of advice.

Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.

If you could filter any thought that wants to occupy your heart and mind through these 8 criteria, you’ll put an end to most conflicts and rancor in your life and relationship. In fact, you’ll be on your way to living a healthy and clean life.

For example, you ask yourself: This thought that’s coming on my mind, is it true? Is it pure? Is it admirable? If this were to be streamed on live TV, would I be proud of it? Once the answer is negative, thrash it. It doesn’t worth a place in your mind!

Don’t allow your heart and mind to be a dumping ground for all kinds of strange and dirty thoughts.  Otherwise, those thoughts will start to control your life. You’re always moving in the direction of your dominant thought!
