Only One Thing

But the Lord answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and bothered about so many things; but only one thing is necessary, for Mary has chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from her.” Luke 10:41-42

We usually think that we must be able to do so many things to really belong in life. Somehow, we believe that if we could be like the proverbial Jack of all trade then we can be called successful in life.

That informed our busy schedule. We go to the gym, join a few social clubs, get involved in some community associations, volunteer here and there and so pack our week and weekend with all sorts of engagements. It also informed our many resolutions at the beginning of each year which unfortunately we never keep.

Somehow, we interpret human beings to mean human doings. And so we live in self condemnation when we’re not like our neighbor who’s always jumping around.

But here’s my point: There’s just one thing that should consume all our attention. There’s just one thing that is most important in life; that we need to commit to above all other things. What is that one thing for you? Mary identified her one thing in the above scripture and the Lord commended her for it. What is it for you?

I’m not advocating for a solo life but rather a mono life. There’s a difference: One is just alone, solitary while the other is just of one. A life that is focused and purposeful; a life that is laser sharp and effective. The power of a laser is because it is monochromatic unlike other lights. That’s why its beam can cut through steel. That’s why it is so much useful and beneficial to humanity.

When you become master at one thing then you could be a Jack for other things. Only as you gain mastery over one thing are you able to help so many. That’s what makes a Specialist so indispensable—just one thing.

To get a different result we have to do things differently. Insanity is defined as doing things the same way and expecting a different result. As we stand at the portals of a new year, find that one thing that will give shape and direction to the rest of your life in the year 2020.

As you begin to plan your schedule for the new year, can you identify that one thing?

Happy new year!
