Jesus got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. Mark 4:39
There are storms in life. Some come through hurricane, others come through crisis. The whole world is presently going through one right now, with so much disruptions.
Most of the time they come without notice. They come suddenly, and when they do, they change our life forever. There are cities and nations that are yet to fully recover from some hurricanes that happened few months or years ago.
How do we deal with storms like we’re currently facing right now? Is it a time to give up, throw our hands in the air and surrender to the forces? Is it a time to become depressed and worry sick? Is it a time to begin to count our losses and retreat to our shell? We can learn from Jesus how to deal with storms of life whenever they show up.
One day Jesus and his disciples were going on the sea when a sudden furious storm arose. Their lives were in danger. Death was staring them in the face. When Jesus got to know about it, he did 3 things.
First, Jesus arose. He woke up from his sleep. That’s the first thing to do. Storms are wake up calls. They jolt us from our sleep and slumber. This is the time to be spiritually alert. This is the time to revive our spirituality. It is not the time to give up or become paralyzed with fear. It is the time to seek the Lord and be connected back to him.
Secondly, Jesus took action. He did something. Yes, we may not be able to do things the way we used to do them, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t do something or should just folds our arms. A time like this is also an opportunity to do things differently. In the midst of chaos there is opportunity. There are blessings in disguise. It may require thinking outside the box.
What can you do at such a time like this? Do we just sit at home binge watching Netflix? Could there be something you’ve been dying to do but for no time? Could there be some learning you could do online? Could this be a time to read a particular book you’ve kept away for so long? Could this be a time to try something different? Could a new business opportunity be opening to you right now?
Lastly, Jesus spoke. He spoke to the waves and the wind and the scripture says the storm died down. Friend, there’s power in your words. Our words can become a self-fulfilling prophecy. This is a time to speak positively because what you say at such a time as this matters. Are you speaking your fears or speaking faith? Are you speaking death or life?
Yes, these are uncertain times, but it’s also an opportune moment. We shall come through this. Amen.
