Now when they saw Joseph afar off, even before he came near them, they conspired against him to kill him. Then they said to one another, “Look, this dreamer is coming! Come therefore, let us now kill him and cast him into some pit; and we shall say, ‘Some wild beast has devoured him.’ We shall see what will become of his dreams!” Genesis 37:18-20

Dreams don’t die. So, don’t be afraid to dream. A great dream doesn’t die with the dreamer. It lives on. People may even succeed in killing the dreamer but can never kill the dream. Because dreams are immortal. They live on.

One of the greatest dreamers of all time is Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In his now famous and immortal speech, he said, “I have a dream.” He shouted it so loud and clear that his enemies hated him just like Joseph’s brothers. And finally, on April 4, 1968, he was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee.

But the dream lives on. Because on Jan 20 2009, Barrack Obama, an African American, became the 44th president of the United States. Friends, dreams don’t die. So don’t be afraid to dream.

One thing I want to call your attention to in this article is a speech delivered by Dr. King the night before he was killed:

I’ve looked over and I’ve seen the Promised Land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the Promised Land. So I’m happy, tonight. I’m not worried about anything. I’m not fearing any man. Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord.

Let me conclude this with three thoughts. First, be clear with your dream. Know where you’re going; know it beyond any doubt. When a vision is clear those who see it will run with it. Second, be resolute in your pursuit. No one will commit to what you’re not committed to. Commitment is contagious. When you have it, those around you will catch it.

Finally, be ready for any eventuality. It was Maya Angelou that said: “Hope for the best but prepare for the worst.” That’s the spirit of a dreamer. They don’t stop dreaming because they might fail, they keep dreaming because they might succeed.
